Having Trouble Transferring iPhone Photos to Your PC? Switch to JPEG

Why This Matters

Apple iPhone devices are popular and well-designed, but they are not always ideal in business environments where compatibility with Windows PCs, older software, document management systems, or line-of-business applications is important.

A common issue we see is that photos taken on an iPhone are often stored in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Format) rather than standard JPEG.

While HEIC offers smaller file sizes and good image quality, many business systems still expect JPEG (.jpg) files. This can cause problems such as:

  • Images failing to upload into business software
  • Photos not opening correctly on older Windows PCs
  • Problems attaching images to legacy systems or specialist applications
  • Difficulty sharing files with customers, suppliers, or third-party systems

The simplest solution is to configure your iPhone to use a more widely compatible format.

This is the best long-term solution if you regularly transfer photos from your iPhone to a Windows PC.

Steps

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Scroll down and tap Camera
  3. Tap Formats
  4. Select Most Compatible

This setting ensures:

  • Photos are saved as JPEG
  • Videos are saved in H.264

These formats are widely supported by Windows PCs and most business software.

Why We Recommend This

For business use, compatibility is usually more important than saving a small amount of storage space.

Although Apple’s default High Efficiency mode is more storage-efficient, Most Compatible avoids many support issues later.

Option 2: Automatically Convert When Transferring to a PC

If you want to keep Apple’s high-efficiency format on the phone but still transfer compatible files to your PC, you can enable automatic conversion.

Steps

  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll down and tap Photos
  3. Scroll to Transfer to Mac or PC
  4. Select Automatic

With this setting enabled:

  • HEIC photos remain on the iPhone
  • When copied to a Windows PC, they are automatically converted to JPEG

Which Setting Should You Use?

Choose Most Compatible if:

✔ You regularly transfer photos to a Windows PC✔ You use specialist business software✔ You want the simplest setup with fewer compatibility issues

Choose Automatic Transfer if:

✔ You want to save space on your iPhone✔ You only occasionally copy photos to a PC✔ You are happy to keep Apple’s native format on the device

Andisa Recommendation

At Andisa IT Consultants Ltd, we generally recommend Camera → Formats → Most Compatible for business users.

Apple devices are often chosen for personal preference and can work well, but they sometimes introduce compatibility issues in Windows-based business environments. Using standard formats such as JPEG helps reduce support issues and improves interoperability with business systems.
