Sending somebody a link to a file in Onedrive

Perhaps you are wanting to send a video or other very large file and cant send it by email!

if this is a sales presentation then email is better than a text message or sending by a 3rd party app like WeTransfer however it can be difficult if you dont know how. Especially if you want to secure teh file so only you can change it!

Here are some easy steps.

The important bits are:

1. You have OneDrive installed and syncing your folders.

  1. Locate the file(s) you want to share in your OneDrive-synced folder.
You can do this by right-clicking the OneDrive icon (the little cloud) in your system tray and selecting “Open Folder.” Navigate to the desired file(s), such as on your Desktop if they are synced there.
  2. Right-click the file you want to share. You will see options like “Share” and “OneDrive Share.” Choose “Share.”
  3. In the sharing dialog, pay attention to the permissions. By default, the link may allow anyone with the link to edit the file. To restrict this:
  4. Click on the settings cog or the permissions text (such as “Anyone with the link can edit”).
  5. Change the setting so recipients can only view the file (not edit).
  6. Optionally, you can set an expiration date for the link, so access is only available for a limited time.
  7. Click “Copy Link” to copy the generated sharing link to your clipboard.
  8. Open Outlook and start a new email. Paste the copied link into the body of the email. You can also drag smaller files directly into the email if needed.

Send the email as usual. Anyone who receives the link will be able to access the file according to the permissions you set.

If you selected “Anyone with the link,” recipients can forward the link and it will still work.

For more control, you can invite specific people instead of using a general sharing link.
