Why Use Outsourced IT Support.

Many people decide to have their own IT team and this is for very good reasons. You get immediate response, dedicated knowledge and flexibility. However you may also get the disadvantages of salary cost, holiday cover, training and retention.

Professional staff, including IT experts all need constant training to hone their skills. If you don’t invest in training your network will become out dated and not allow your business to grow. This is a costly mistake.

Immediate response or Firefighting?

Although not all IT departments are guilty, fast response often means that problems are being covered up with a sticking plaster approach. Regular problems indicate that there is something underlying. If they are fixed quickly it probably means it’s a regular problem. So immediate response isn’t always the best thing. It can indicate the lack of strategy.

Documentation and procedures are the things that make a business strong. Unfortunately IT staff are not always good at documenting and sharing information. They often remember passwords by setting everyone to the same. This increases risk of infection and data loss.

So internal IT teams can be very strong but only if there is constant investment just like any other key item in a company. The very benefits can be disadvantages unless they are carefully managed. As an alternative consider partnering with a 3rd party company who will build a relationship with you. This will mean carefully choosing an IT company who has existed long enough to build up a good reputation and a knowledge bank. They will also be sized so that they are large enough to give reasonable response times yet not no large that you are a small fish to them.

Make sure that they have a training ethos for their staff and that they are happy to work alongside your own IT team if required. This way you can have the best of both worlds by making a composite IT team with holidays and training covered by the 3rd party yet having the speed of an internal team.
